What began as a preaching point at Bethel Tabernacle of San Souci under the leadership of Pastor Euphrates Alexander soon became Babonneau Pentecostal Church, which is now formally known as Deliverance Pentecostal Church.
From this outreach a nucleus of eight persons gave their lives to Jesus. These persons commuted from Babonneau to Bethel Tabernacle twice weekly on Bible Study night and Sunday for maturing of the word.
When the leadership saw the faithfulness and enthusiasm of those eight persons, it was decided that the time had arrived to acquire a property to accommodate the thriving church. Pastor Alexander used his influence to obtain a piece of land form his late father Hubert Alexander and in 1972 – 1973 a wooden building was erected measuring 30' x 40'
Mid week services were then shifted to the Babonneau Church building, but the church still traveled to Bethel Tabernacle on Sundays
In 1973, Pastor John Delice, a member of the Bethel Tabernacle, graduated from the West Indies School of Theology, and was installed as the resident pastor of this branch work of Bethel Tabernacle on December 23 rd 1973.
Pastor John Delice and the eight faithful members embarked on street meetings, touching several communities in the area. Preaching points were established all over the community of Babonneau. As the word was preached, many received the Gospel gladly and committed their lives to Jesus.
The 30’ x 40’ was now too small and another structure was built. It consists of an upstairs church and a downstairs parsonage.
The membership again grew rapidly, and by 1983, plans were being mad to build a new structure. With the help of two teams from the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, under the supervision of Harold Scovmand, together with the members of the church, the church, auditorium and upper floor was constructed. After the team left, the members continue building, working tiresomely evening after evening to complete the structure. They not only gave their time and strength, but also invested their finances. During this time, church services were being held at the Babonneau Community Center. On a gradual basis, additions were made. As the vision expanded the building expanded. The structure now houses a Day Care, a prayer room, a Sunday school room, parsonage and pastor’s office.
In 1991, a new work was attempted in the Boguis area. A loan was sought and due to some misunderstanding, a separation arose in the body, and obstructed the progress of the work. Along with hindrances a falling away took place and some members left for other churches.
In the mean time expansion continued on the building, and much ministry took place. The church grew to be a spiritual matured body and each department flourished. Christian Education department headed by Kasandra Alexander, Men’s Ministry by Alexander Lucien, Women Department by Elizabeth Jacob and Youth Ministry by Joseph Popo. The leaders of these ministries were dedicated and responsible and were not afraid to put their hands to the plow.
In April 1996, Rev. John Delice, along with his family, migrated to the USA to further his children’s education. In his absence, Bro Kenneth John Sealy, along with the church board, was left responsible for the running of the church. The training received by the board and leaders was a valuable asset in their absence. The church continued to grow spiritually with persons like Pastor John Joseph, Sis Josephine Romaine, the District Executive along with co-pastors of P.A.W.I., assisting in the ministry of the word. Indeed we are grateful for these people.
The members, under the leadership of the church board, continued to complete the building adding new toilet facilities and the completion of the front court. This building is dept free.
In 1997, Rev and Sis John Delice resigned as pastor of the church. The ministry continued with Bro. Kenneth John Sealy along with the church board, as the leaders of the assembly. The PAWI executive appointed Pastor John Joseph to help in the leadership of the church. Pastor John Joseph is now the Pastor of the Odsan Pentecostal Church.
In 1998, the church embarked on an open air crusade in Boguis which was successful. Several persons gave their life to Jesus. However, upon completion of the crusade, the board saw it necessary for a church to be established in Boguis of which Bro. Aidan Blondell is given leadership presently.
The church celebrated its 25 th anniversary on the 10 th of January 1999, in the absence of a residing pastor. The theme for the anniversary was “A revisit to Pentecost”. The guest speaker was Pastor Fredrick from St.Vincent.
In the year 1999, pastor Robert Marquis was elected as pastor of the church for one year. He began this ministry on the 6 th of June. During that year, in the month of November, he embarked upon a trip to Tortola BVI, which was his best ever. There he got married to Miss Claris Christine Francis, a member of the New Testament Church of God in Tortola. On June 6 th 2000, Pastor and Sis Robert Marquis were elected as full time pastors of the Babonneau Pentecostal Church. As pastors of the Church, their goal is to see the members of the Babonneau community saved for Jesus.
One of the things they did, was to change the church’s name from Babonneau Pentecostal Church to what it is now; The Deliverance Pentecostal Church. United as one, the pastor and members of the Deliverance Pentecostal Church, continued more evangelism work in the Babonneau community. Although some members left to attend other churches, the membership of the Deliverance Pentecostal Church still grew. Ministries in the church continued to develop, under the leadership of the pastor and lives were continually being saved in the community.
During the year 2000, a Video Ministry was formed. Video equipment was bought and Sunday Morning services are being video taped, edited and broadcasted on Saturdays via DBS, during our TV program. Manna ministry, which it was once named, is now called Hope for the Nation Telecast; for we believe that there is hope for our nation.
Work on the building continued and a new alter was constructed. Drapes were installed and chairs were bought, all with the help of the church members, giving their support and finance, to see the ministry in Babonneau continue.
A Beautification Committee was put together, to ensure that the sanctuary was always kept clean and beautiful.
In the year 2004, after four years of struggling, the church daycare was finally registered, under the name, Heritage Nurturing Center. To date, the daycare consists of twenty (20) children and three (3) teachers. Our prayer is to see the Heritage Nurturing Center, the best daycare in St.Lucia.
